Who qualifies for a loft insulation grant?

We all know heat rises and if your loft isn’t properly insulated, as much as a quarter of that lovely warmth you pay good money to create is going to escape through your home’s roof. A simple solution is to install loft insulation. Not only will this lower your bills and your carbon footprint, but with grants for loft insulation available from the government, you could make those all-important cost and energy savings for free. Read on to find out how.

As part of a government-run initiative, known as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), the nation’s biggest energy providers are obliged to help British homeowners to make their homes more energy-efficient. Aimed at tackling fuel poverty and reducing carbon emissions, the latest round of government funding aims to help the most vulnerable in society, especially low-income households, to improve their standards of heating.

The ECO grant covers the cost of installing a whole range of energy-efficient measures, including boilers, first-time central heating, underfloor insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. While most people can see the benefits of installing a brand-new boiler and central heating, the thought of putting loft insulation in your roof space may not immediately spring to mind. But it can make a huge difference, as we’ll explain.

What is loft insulation?

Loft insulation is essentially a barrier of fibreglass (made from recycled glass bottles, sand, newspapers or other materials) that is installed in your roof space. This prevents the loss of hot air, which keeps your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Loft insulation can either be laid between the horizontal beams (joists) along the floor of your loft or amongst the angled beams (rafters) supporting the roof.

What are the benefits of loft insulation?

Without loft insulation, as much as a quarter of the heating you pay for could be lost through your uninsulated roof. Just think of the savings you could make with a bit of loft insulation. In fact, our research has found that the average annual heating bill for a two-bedroom house is £880. That means you could be an extra £220 better off every year simply by installing loft insulation! The benefits don’t end there either.

Decent loft insulation should last more than 40 years, which means you’ll enjoy those welcome cost-savings year on year for decades. Plus, you’ll enjoy a much cosier and thermally efficient home and will be doing your bit to reduce carbon emissions. By improving your home’s energy efficiency rating, you might even increase its market value too. As you can see, there are countless benefits to having loft installation fitted in your home.

Can I get free loft insulation?

Yes! As long as you’re a homeowner or have the express permission of your management company or social housing provider, you could be eligible for an ECO grant that gives you all the benefits of loft insulation at no extra cost to you. You’ll need to hurry, though, because the scheme is due to end in March 2022.
